5 Strategies to Maximize the Benefits of TEAS Practice Tests

Dedicating nearly four hours to a TEAS practice test means you'll want to make every minute count. Implementing the five essential tips below as you take your TEAS test will significantly boost your preparation for the actual test day.

#1: Take the Practice Test in the Format You'll Encounter on the Real TEAS

Deciding whether you'll take the TEAS test at a test center or at home is one of the first decisions you'll face. We personally recommend you take the test at a test center. Why? Because test centers can ensure zero distractions during the test. Your mind at a test center will also be focused 100% on that test as it is an environment that is not meant to be relaxing. During a test, you don't wanna be relaxed. You want to be alert, focused, and fully awake. For those reasons, we recommend you take the TEAS at a test center and not at home.

You can recreate this focus environment by not studying from your bed or bedroom. Go to a coffee shop or your town's public library if possible.

#2: Print the Test and Work Through It on Paper

If the TEAS is to be taken on paper rather than digitally, practicing in the same format is essential. This approach ensures familiarity with the test-taking environment, from handling scratch work in your booklet to practicing essay writing on the official lined paper.

#3: Adhere Strictly to Section Timing

Timing challenges are common on the TEAS, where even a few extra minutes can significantly impact your score. Practicing with strict adherence to the official time limits is vital for getting accustomed to the pacing and identifying areas for improvement.

Here are the recommended times for each section of the TEAS, along with the suggested duration per question:

TEAS Section Time per Section Time per Question
Reading 55 mins 73 secs
Math 57 mins 90 secs
Science 60 mins 72 secs
English 37 mins 60 secs

Remember, breaks are part of the TEAS, so include them in your practice sessions. Do note that taking a break does not count against your alloted time on the test. Similarly, forgoing a break does not add extra time to your allotted test time.

#4: Complete the Test in One Sitting, If Possible

The TEAS, much like a marathon, requires endurance to perform well throughout its duration. Taking practice tests in a single sitting best simulates actual test conditions and builds the stamina needed for test day.

If circumstances prevent a full, uninterrupted practice session, breaking it into parts is better than not practicing at all, provided each section's timing is strictly followed.

#5: Review Your Answers and Learn from Mistakes

The primary goal of taking TEAS practice tests is to learn from every question, whether answered correctly or incorrectly. Reviewing your answers thoroughly, understanding why mistakes were made, and using them as learning opportunities are crucial steps in your preparation.

#6: Seek Additional Resources If You're Not Improving

While some students excel at self-directed study with practice tests, others may need extra support to address weaknesses and refine test-taking strategies. Options include online TEAS prep programs, tutoring, comprehensive study guides, and other available resources.

For instance, a structured TEAS Prep program can offer tailored study plans and adapt to your skill level, focusing on your specific needs. Additionally, working with a tutor can provide personalized guidance to conquer difficult topics and achieve your best score.
